The equipment is self-contained and is close circuit system.  It consists of two test sections, one for pipe surge and other for water hammer phenomenon. The whole system incorporates a head tank, measuring tank, sump tank,

circulating pump, a lever operated gate valve and flow control valve. The water enters the test pipe via the constant head tank and discharges into the measuring tank.Two electronic Pressure sensors with current output of 4 –20mA are installed on the unit.

The present set-up has a facility to interface the system with computer which enables to log the experimental data using computer. The educational software and data-logging package has been developed for unit. The software environment base is of Labview of NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS, USA. This software is compatible to interfacing unit designed by K. C. Engineers. This software package provides a comprehensive educational software environment within which the investigations can be performed. This software is capable to tabulate the sample readings according to the requirement of experiment under study and results obtained can be compared. The real time data acquisition can be done by interfacing the set-up with computer using software. Software allows the user to have control on data logging, printing the stored data, preparing spread sheets in Excel etc.

Francis Turbine is a reaction turbine, which was developed by an English born American Engineer Sir J. B. Francis. The water enters the turbine through the outer periphery of the runner in the radial direction and leaves the runner in axial direction and hence it is called a mixed flow turbine. As the water flows to the runner, a part of pressure energy goes on changing into kinetic energy. Thus the water through the runner is under pressure. The runner is completely enclosed in a air tight casing and the casing & runner is always full of water. The present set-up consists of a runner. The water is fed to the turbine by means of Centrifugal Pump, radically to the runner. The runner is directly mounted on one end of a central SS shaft and other end is connected to a brake arrangement. The circular window of the turbine casing is provided with a transparent acrylic sheet for observation of flow on to the runner. This runner assembly is supported by thick cast iron pedestal. Load is applied to the turbine with the help of brake arrangement so that the efficiency of the turbine can be calculated. A draught tube is fitted on the outlet of the turbine. The set-up is complete with guide mechanism. Pressure and Vacuum gauges are fitted at the inlet and outlet of the turbine to measure the total supply head on the turbine.

Hydraulic Ram is used for pumping small quantity of water at high head, when large quantity of water at small head is available. It operates on the principle that if flowing water is suddenly brought to rest in a long pipe, a phenomena known as water hammer occurs, wherein a pressure wave travels along the pipe. This principle is used in the Hydraulic Ram to pump water. The set-up consists of a box incorporating pulse and non-return valves and a supply reservoir on a stand which is fed by the overhead tank. An air vessel above the valve chamber smoothes cyclic fluctuations from the Ram delivery. Different pressure may be applied to the pulse valve to change the closing pressure and hence the operating characteristic

The present set-up is designed to visualize the ideal flow around immersed body. It consists of a flow table in which flow of water is circulated in between two transparent sheets with a small gap between them. Water is supplied to the table and a colored dye is injected in the inlet of flow at different location. Water from the sump tank is pumped by a centrifugal pump to a calming section for table and after passing through transparent sheet it goes to sump tank. By-pass and flow control valves are provided to regulate the flow.Flow is made laminar by operating inlet control valve for water and it is visualized due to transparent sheet and colour. The Centre of Pressure Apparatus has been designed to determine the static thrust exerted by a fluid on a submerged surface and allow comparison of the measured magnitude and position of this force with simple theory.A fabricated quadrant is mounted on a balance arm, which pivots on knife-edges. The knife-edges coincide with the centre of arc of the quadrant. Thus, of the hydrostatic forces acting on the quadrant when immersed, only the force on the rectangular end face gives rise to a moment about the knife-edges. The balance arm incorporates a balance pan for the weights supplied and an adjustable counterbalance. This assembly is mounted on top of an acrylic tank, which may be leveled by adjusting screwed feet. An indicator attached to the side of the tank shows when the balance arm is horizontal. Water is admitted to the top of the tank by a flexible tube and may be drained through a cock in the side of the tank. The water level is indicated on a scale on the side of the quadrant.
